Submit your article to a journal

Ready to submit? Most journals use an online submission system like ScholarOne or Editorial Manager. Check the page of your preferred journal to find out which submission tool they use. If the journal does not have an online submission management system, you will need to contact the journal via its website.

The information on this page currently only pertains to De Gruyter journals. To learn more about publishing with Brill, please visit brill.com.

Checklist: Are you ready to submit your manuscript?

1. Is your manuscript prepared?

Ensure that your manuscript has everything required by the journal, is formatted correctly and is grammatically correct and error-free. Check that you have the abstract, title, keywords, figures, references and citations, and any other specific requirements that can vary per journal.

2. Do you have a cover letter?

Many journals ask for a cover letter to accompany your submission. Use the cover letter as an opportunity to “sell” your article to the journal editor by highlighting your findings, the impact of your research, and why you think your work is of interest to the journal’s readers.

Your cover letter should also include a statement that your paper has not been previously published elsewhere and is not under consideration by another journal. You should also declare whether there are any conflicts of interest.

3. What data do you need to share?

Many journals require authors to make their underlying data available to the research community to encourage collaboration and learning within the field. You may be asked to provide a link to a data repository or complete a Data Available Statement that confirms the presence or absence of your shared data. Check the journal author guidelines to find out what their requirements are before you submit.

4. Do you already have an ORCID iD?

Many publishers require your ORCID iD details during the submission process. ORCID iD is a free unique identifier that stays the same even if your name or affiliation changes. It creates an automatic digital record of your work and helps journals to identify you and your research.

5. Are you publishing Open Access?

Are you mandated to publish your work openly, or are you part of an institutional agreement that allows you to publish in open access without charge?

Before starting your submission, make sure you’re clear on whether you are publishing your article open access. For hybrid journals, you will be asked to confirm this during the submission process. Publishing openly affects the license your article is published under and could incur an article publishing charge so check if you have funding.
